What is Eurocentrism, racism and academic freedom in South Africa about?
In February 2019, the University and College Union (UCU) -the trade union representing academics and academic-related professional services staff working in United Kingdom (UK) universities -submitted a complaint to a working group nominated by the United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization (UNESCO) and the International Labour Organization (ILO) alleging that the UK government had breached the 1997 UNESCO Recommendation on academic freedom (University and College Union 2019). The 1997 UNESCO Recommendation, described by UCU as 'an international instrument which sets out principles concerning the rights and responsibilities of higher education teaching personnel' (University and College Union 2019, p. 1) has become an iconic document of contemporary debates concerning academic freedom. Within the recommendation, the following definition of academic freedom is offered: Higher-education teaching personnel are entitled to the maintaining of academic freedom, that is to say, the right, without constriction by prescribed doctrine, to freedom of teaching and discussion, freedom in carrying out research and disseminating and publishing the results thereof, freedom to
