What is Fundamentals and Performance of Solar Photovoltaic Systems about?

Solar PV technology is poised to become one of the primary forms for electric power generation in the very near future. In this chapter, the typical PV systems are examined at different levels in relation to their performance and design. Starting from the elementary solar cells, the underlying pn junction model is reviewed as the basis for the photovoltaic effect. At the next level, PV modules are introduced with a specific focus on the module structure, parametric characterization, and the performance variation against different environmental conditions such as irradiance level, operating temperature, and shading effect. Finally, we discuss the typical components for a PV system, and describe the different design objectives and approaches for the stand-alone and grid-connected systems.
