This document summarizes a 3D finite element analysis of failure modes in the Charpy impact test. An elastic-viscoplastic constitutive model that accounts for ductile fracture by void growth and coalescence as well as brittle cleavage failure is used. Full 3D transient simulations of a Charpy V-notch specimen under impact loading are performed and the stress/strain fields are compared to plane strain predictions. Failure by both ductile void growth and brittle cleavage are considered.
