George and Martha Black were pioneers in the Yukon Territory. Martha came to the Yukon during the Klondike Gold Rush in the late 1890s, determined to break free from her strict upbringing. She became a successful businesswoman, running sawmills and stamp mills. She met and married George Black in 1904. George had also come to the Yukon during the gold rush and worked mining claims before becoming a successful lawyer. Both George and Martha held high political offices, with George serving as a Yukon territor
