Ibn Firnas was an inventor and engineer who lived in Al-Andalus (modern day Spain) in the 9th century. In 875 at age 65, he designed and built a flying machine capable of carrying humans. He invited people to witness his first flight from a mountain near Cordoba, which was successful, though he suffered injuries from a poor landing method.
