This document presents the first seismic stratigraphic analysis of Zhongsha atoll in the South China Sea based on new 2D seismic reflection data. The analysis reveals over 1 km of Neogene carbonate sediments overlying a metamorphic basement. Faults trending NE-SW and E-W formed during Cenozoic rifting and terminate in the Middle Miocene strata. Atolls and reefs initiated in the Early Miocene, mimicking the underlying topography.
