What is Our Mediterranean cruise by steamer New England in 1900 about?
Unsigned binding design by Henry Elmer Ladd in gold, blue and white on dark green cloth. Frontispiece and 16 full page illustrations after photographs taken during the voyage. A travelogue of travels in the Mediterranean by a prominent Minneapolis resident. The striking cover design was created by the author's husband, Henry Elmer Ladd, who started his professional career as a grocery clerk, became a confectioner, then started a Real Estate business that eventually expanded to include loans for investors. He must also have had some training in the fine arts, as his binding design of the steamer "New England" plying the waters of the Mediterranean towards an eastern sunrise in just two colors and gilt on a dark green background could easily be mistaken for the work of the professional binding designers of the period.
