What is Understanding Listeriosis Infection about?

Listeriosis is a foodborne illness caused by the bacteria Listeria monocytogenes. It primarily affects pregnant women, newborns, the elderly and those with weakened immune systems. Listeria is able to survive at low temperatures and inside immune cells, making it difficult to treat. Symptoms range from flu-like symptoms to meningitis. It is contracted by eating contaminated foods and can be fatal in around 20-30% of cases. Thorough cooking and cleaning are recommended to prevent listeriosis.
