EditordPractice has changed in ICUs with the goal to minimise sedation in order to reduce length of stay (LOS) and delirium. 1 This should result in decreased benzodiazepine use, 2 and volatile anaesthetic agents could provide a safe alternative. Sevoflurane appears to be effective in reducing wake-up and extubation times compared with propofol or midazolam, 3,4 and was recently described for sedation in acute respiratory distress syndrome (ARDS). 5 Studies suggest renal safety, 6 but data are lacking on long-term sedation. Polyuria and nephrogenic diabetes insipidus (NDI) have been observed after prolonged sedation. 7,8 Our objective was to describe outcomes and characteristics of NDI related to sevoflurane sedation in our ICUs. In this retrospective study, we selected all patients undergoing sevoflurane sedation admitted in the ICUs of Bretonneau University Hospital (Tours, France) between January 1, 2015 and July 31, 2017.
