What is Adsorption Equilibrium Isotherms, Kinetics and Thermodynamics about?

Adsorption is a successful separation technique and has been employed in various applications, including wastewater treatment by adsorbing contaminants from water [1,2]. However, adsorption efficiency and characteristics of the adsorbents, for example, adsorption capacity, feasibility, etc. are examined by different adsorption isotherms (Henry's, Langmuir, DubininÀRadushkevich, Freundlich, Temkin, RedlichÀPeterson, KobleÀCarrigan and so on), kinetic models (first order, pseudo-first-order, second-order, pseudo-second-order, intraparticle diffusion, etc.) and thermodynamic parameters (activation energy, entropy, free energy, etc.) [3,4]. This chapter briefly explains the various models of adsorption isotherms and chemical kinetics and elaborates on the use of thermodynamic parameters during the adsorption process. ## Adsorption equilibrium isotherms Adsorption isotherms assist in the prediction of the adsorption mechanism and interactions between the adsorbate and adsorbent during the adsorption process, at a constant temperature and specific solution pH. The amount of adsorbed substance on the adsorbent is calculated based on remaining concentration (mostly in ppm) in the solution.
