What is Saung Gauk: The National Harp of Burma about?
The saung is an arched harp that is the national musical instrument of Burma. It is unique as the only surviving harp tradition in Asia. Until the 1800s, the saung was exclusively used for general population music, but it is still played in intimate chamber music settings of the royal court, where it holds the most prized status. The saung has a long neck carved from tree root with 13 silk strings and a body covered with animal hide decorated with gold and mica inlays of flowers and trees.
