Swimming has a long history dating back to ancient times with early depictions of swimming found in cave paintings and drawings from Egypt and Mesopotamia from as early as 4000 BC. The scientific study of swimming techniques began in the early 20th century and led to developments like the two-piece swimsuit. Competitive swimming grew into an organized sport in the 19th century and became an Olympic event starting in 1896, initially only for men until women were allowed to compete beginning in 1912.
