What is Complications Of Scalene Lymph Node Biopsy about?

E XCISIONAL biopsy of the scalene lymph nodes has been generally accepted as a diagnostic adjunct. It is employed in a variety of intrathoracic diseases, and the indications are fairly well delineated. The operative procedure is standardized and its diagnostic merits have been extensively evaluated. Little attention, however, has been paid to the hazards and complications of the operation. A review of the recent literature reveals 2,261 reported instances of scalene lymph node biopsy, with only a cursory mention of nine "insignificant" complications. 1 " 21 In our own experience, hematoma and wound infection are not uncommon, while lymph fistula, due to injury of the thoracic duct on the left, and transitory Horner's syndrome have also been noted. Personal communications from other thoracic surgeons and a study of our own material would indicate that the procedure is fraught with more serious and hitherto unreported hazards. It is our intention to give an account of two serious complications and their management as they were encountered during the performance of 320 scalene node biopsies in a university surgical resident training program. ## CASE REPORTS CASE 1.-Following the excis
