What is Preliminary Investigations of the MR-Compatible Real-Time Optical Fiber Dosimetry Probe for MR-Guided Brachytherapy Procedures about?

During the phantom tests, errors of up to 4.5 mm were observed in needle tip placement in the cranial-caudal direction, which shifts the entire source train for that needle. A possible strategy to deal with this problem is to measure the lengths of the needles that protrude from the implant template in order to verify needle tip depth. Although the accuracy of this technique is limited, it can be used to minimize errors. Conclusions: US imaging provides good delineation of the prostate during TRUS-based brachytherapy. Reconstruction of the implant geometry using US, however, is subject to a number of factors that limit accuracy. If these factors are identified, strategies to mitigate them are available and if used, will result in accurate reconstruction geometry and dose planning for HDR prostate BT.
