What is Understanding Hematocrit and Blood Layers about?
Hematocrit, also known as packed cell volume (PCV), measures the percentage of red blood cells in blood. When a blood sample is centrifuged, it separates into three layers based on density: erythrocytes, buffy coat containing platelets and white blood cells, and plasma. Erythrocytes constitute about 45% of the blood volume in a normal sample. The plasma layer is mostly water but also contains proteins, nutrients, waste products, gases, and electrolytes that help transport substances around the body.
