were analyzed: 1) race -African American (AA) versus White (W), 2) health insurance status (as a surrogate for low socioeconomic status) -private payor (P) versus Medicare (no supplement), Medicaid, or self-pay (O) and 3) county of residence -New Hanover (NH) versus distant. Low, intermediate, or high-risk groups were categorized from clinical stage, PSA, and Gleason grade. Radiation treatment was classified as external beam (conformal and intensity modulated) versus brachytherapy (alone or in combination). The potential impact of demographic variables on risk group and treatment modality was evaluated utilizing Chi-square analysis. Results: Fifteen of 107 (14%) W patients presented with high-risk disease versus 9 of 40 (22%) AA patients (Chi-squareϭ1.53). There was no significant influence of health insurance status on high-risk disease (14% P vs. 25% O; Chi squareϭ1.49). Fifteen of 75 (20%) patients residing in NH county had high-risk disease versus 9 of 72 (12%) from distant counties (Chi-squareϭ1.51).
