Lincoln Wilson Washington Smith, a porter on a train, agrees to watch over a dog carrying case for $5 while its owner is away. When he opens the case, a strange creature tumbles out - it had the weight and sounds of a dog but is unlike any dog Smith had seen. Screaming in terror, Smith tries to flee the compartment but gets stuck in the door before falling from the moving train and breaking his leg. Passengers discover it was not the train hitting a man that caused it to abruptly stop, deepening the mystery
