Ocden was convicted of illegal recruitment in large scale and three counts of estafa. She recruited several people by promising them jobs in a stuffed toy factory in Italy, collecting a 70k placement fee from each. However, she did not send them to Italy as promised. On appeal, the Supreme Court upheld her conviction, finding she committed illegal recruitment by giving the impression she could send them abroad for work and collecting fees, but failing to reimburse them when deployment did not occur through
