What is 2422 about?

## Purpose/Objective(s): To determine if SUV (standardized uptake value) of FDG-PET can reflect the degree of mitosis or apotosis in tumor cells and predict the outcome of radiation therapy and prognosis in patients with head and neck malignancy. Materials/Methods: Forty-five patients underwent FDG-PET scan before radiation therapy for head and neck malignancy were the materials of this study. Primary sites of their disease were oropharynx in 20 patients, nasopharynx in 16 patients, hypophrynx in 3 patients and others in 6 patients. According to TNM classification, the numbers of patients who had T1:T2:T3:T4 tumor were 8:15:15:7 and those of N0:N1:N2:N3 node were 21:8:15:1. Biopsy was performed in all patients, which revealed squamous cell ca. in 33 patients, undifferentiated ca. in 8 patients and others in 4 patients. SUV of primary lesion and regional lymphnode(s) (excluded in N0 patients) were evaluated in all patients. Biopsy specimens were available in 14 patients to determine the degree of mitosis and apotosis.
