What is Japan Cabinet Approves Abdication Bill about?

The Cabinet approved a bill allowing Emperor Akihito to abdicate in late 2018, which would be the first abdication in about 200 years. The bill was designed specifically for Akihito due to his age of 85 and weakening health. His abdication will trigger a change in the gengo era name at the start of 2019. The government expects the bill to pass smoothly and before the mid-June Diet session ends in order to set up the special abdication and succession of Crown Prince Naruhito.
