Polytrauma, or multiple severe injuries, is defined as an Injury Severity Score (ISS) of greater than 16. The ISS is a medical score used to assess trauma severity by examining six body regions and assigning each an Abbreviated Injury Score (AIS) from 1-6. The three most severely injured regions are squared and summed to calculate the ISS.
