Formulae are used to represent chemical compounds using symbols for the elements. A formula shows which elements are present in a compound and in what proportions. For example, the formula for water is H2O, indicating that each water molecule contains two hydrogen atoms and one oxygen atom. The formula for sodium sulphide is Na2S, showing that sodium sulphide contains sodium and sulphur atoms in a 2:1 ratio.
