Viagra works by blocking an enzyme called PDE5 that breaks down cGMP, which causes penis arteries to relax and allow more blood flow leading to an erection. It only has this effect when a man is sexually aroused, as arousal triggers the production of nitric oxide which causes cGMP production. Viagra selectively blocks just the PDE5 enzyme found mainly in the penis, so its effects are localized and it allows an erection to occur and be maintained long enough for sex.
