What is History of the Indian Rupee about?

The rupee has a long history as a currency in India and surrounding regions. It originated from silver coins used in ancient India and its name comes from the Sanskrit word for silver. The modern rupee was introduced by Sher Shah Suri in the 16th century and has been used continuously since then under British rule and as the currency of independent India and other nations. It was historically a silver standard currency but is now a fiat currency issued by the Reserve Bank of India.
