## Abstract Treatment of different 3α‐hydroxy‐5β‐steroids with lead tetraacetate leads to the formation of 3α, 9‐oxido derivatives in yields that are strongly dependent on the nature of ring C. The significance of these reactions with regard to the mechanism of the lead tetraacetate oxidation of monohydric alcohols is discussed.
