What is A Rotman Lens at W-Band about?
Many applications in radar and communications require antennas with multiple beam and beam steering capabilities. Rotman lenses are useful as multiple beam forming networks for linear antennas providing the advantage of broadband performance and frequency invariant beam pointing. For microwave bands lens design is predominantly performed in striphne or microstnp technology to meet the requirements for compact and robust antenna systems. In the millimeter wave range, however, a parallel plate cavity forming with waveguide ports arranged around the contour is more appropriate to avoid increasing losses with decreasing operating wavelengths. To reduce the overall size of such a waveguide fed antenna system and to minimize the losses further a new design was developed at W-band around 94 GHz combining a parallel plate cavity, antenna array and the interconnecting transmission lines in one plane and in a single block. The design and development of Rotman lens at 94 GHz feeding an antenna array for beam steering applications is presented. The construction is completely realized in waveguide technology. Experimental results are compared with theoretical considerations and electromagnetic
