According to the foreword, this little book is an introductory text aimed at final year undergraduates and graduate students. In it, the principles of M6ssbauer spectroscopy and various applications of this technique are covered in 13 chapters. The book has been directly reproduced from typed manuscripts of slightly different fonts, resulting in only moderate legibility. M6ssbauer spectroscopy and its applications is centred around the physics of the M6ssbauer effect. In the first five chapters (pp. 1-60), the basic principles of M6ssbauer spectroscopy are described in some detail. Of the remaining space, 56 pages are devoted to applications of this technique. In 8 separate chapters that are between 3 and 12 pages long, applications to Chemistry, Metallurgy, Magnetism, Radiation Damage, Biochemistry, Archaeology and Fine Arts, Surface Science and Backscattering Methods are described. An additional chapter on computer-fitting of M6ssbauer spectra, which is of paramount importance in the application of this technique in practice, would have been welcome.
