What is COVID-19 and Food Safety about?
## Key Points • Laboratory studies have shown that SARS-CoV-2, the virus that causes COVID-19, can remain infectious on foods and packaging. The length of time that infectious SARS-CoV-2 can be detected depends on the food or packaging type, the starting concentration of virus, and storage conditions. • SARS-CoV-2 has rarely been detected on actual food or packaging. Most reports are of viral RNA detection rather than the infectious virus, which does not indicate the presence of an infectious hazard nor imply a risk to people that handle the food or packaging. • There are several reports where there was a genetic linkage between SARS-CoV-2 found on imported cold-chain products or packaging, and from cases that handled them. However, the direction of the transmission was not demonstrated and alternative transmission routes were also possible. • There is no evidence that consumption of food has resulted in infection by SARS-CoV-2 despite billions of meals having been consumed since the start of the pandemic. Cooking and the normal pH of stomach acid will inactivate the virus. • Respiratory droplets and aerosols are, by far, the predominant transmission route. • The best practice to r
