The study examined the effects of different biomaterial wear particles on bone tissue at the bone-implant interface using a rat model. Rats received implants and injections of titanium, cobalt chromium, ceramic, UHMWPE, or saline particles. Bone density, inflammation, and osteoclast activity were evaluated over 16 weeks. Cobalt chromium particles resulted in the most bone loss while ceramic particles caused the most tissue formation.
