What is Understanding Channel Quality Indicator (CQI) about?

LTE uses OFDMA for downlink transmission and SC-FDMA for uplink. The basic downlink resource unit is a resource block, which consists of 12 subcarriers over 0.5ms in time. Each resource element within a resource block can carry QPSK, 16QAM or 64QAM symbols. With 64QAM modulation, one resource element carries 6 bits of data. In a 20MHz channel with 100 resource blocks, the maximum downlink throughput is about 100Mbps for single antenna and over 400Mbps with 4x4 MIMO.
