Rita Dove grew up with a deep passion for books that allowed her to travel anywhere through reading, and she spent many summer days browsing the bookshelves in her home. One science fiction story she read fascinated her with its depiction of an alternate universe accessed through a sculpture built by a village idiot. An experience meeting the poet John Ciardi as a teenager revealed to Dove that writing could be a real career pursued by living people.
