Luis Walter Alvarez was an American experimental physicist who was awarded the Nobel Prize in Physics in 1968. After receiving his PhD from the University of Chicago in 1936, Alvarez went to work at the University of California, Berkeley where he made important contributions to nuclear physics and helped develop radar technology that aided the Allied forces in World War II. Alvarez also worked on the Manhattan Project and observed the Trinity nuclear test and the bombing of Hiroshima.
