## Inverse problems A special issue of EABE is periodically assembled, consisting of a series of papers dedicated to a theme germane to current engineering analysis. As inverse problems and optimization find increasing importance in our day-to-day engineering practice we have sought contributions ranging over several fields of application. Authors have contributed papers addressing inverse problems in mechanics spanning detection of sources terms, material property evaluation, inverse scattering of elastic waves and residual stress determination employing optimization methods relying on a variety of tools ranging from Kalman filtering to neural networks. Integral equation methods for inverse design of wings in a supersonic flowregime as well as sensitivity issues in thermo-structural optimization are considered by contributing authors. A genetic algorithm approach to inverse problems arising in cathodic protection in a corrosive environment is presented in detail. A general paper closes the issue, reviewing and addressing important issues posed by stochastic inputs to the solution of forward and inverse heat transfer problems whether solved by BEM or other numerical techniques.
