This special issue of Mathematics and Computers in Simulation contains a selection of some of the best papers in the different topics presented at the first IMACS-IFAC Symposium on Mathematical Modelling and Simulation in Agriculture and Bio-Industries (M2SABI) held in Brussels (Belgium) in May 1995. This first meeting of a new community, composed of specialists coming from different horizons, really met a necessity.
