The diaphragm is a curved musculofibrous sheet that separates the thoracic and abdominal cavities. It has three parts - sternal, costal, and lumbar. It is attached medially and laterally via arcuate ligaments. The right and left crura arise from the lumbar vertebrae. During breathing, the diaphragm contracts to increase the volume of the thoracic cavity, drawing air into the lungs. It receives its blood supply from the phrenic arteries and is innervated by the phrenic nerves.
