Cotton has its origins in South Asia, with the earliest evidence of cotton use dating back to 5500 BCE found at Mehrgarh in modern-day Pakistan. It was later domesticated in Mexico between 3400-2300 BCE and grown in Peru as early as 4200 BCE. China, India, USA, Pakistan and Uzbekistan are currently the five largest cotton producers globally. Within Pakistan, cotton is a major cash crop grown commercially in various provinces and districts across the country.
