Purpose/Objective(s): To assess the impact of hormonal therapy (HTx) on biochemical failure rates in intermediate risk prostate cancer patients treated with brachytherapy and external beam irradiation. Materials/Methods: From 1994-2007, 424 patients with intermediate-risk prostate cancer as defined by the National Comprehensive Cancer Network (NCCN) were treated with brachytherapy and external beam irradiation with or without HTx. Gleason score was 7 in 75% of patients. The PSA ranged from 1.4 to 20 ng/mL (median, 7.69 ng/mL). Stage was T2b-T2c in 51.2% of patients. A total of 350 patients received HTx while 74 did not. The typical duration of hormonal therapy was 9 months. Combination therapy was delivered using a Pd-103 implant (prescription dose -100 Gy) followed 6-8 weeks later by 45 Gy of external beam given in 25 fractions. Biologically-effective doses (BED) were calculated for each treatment and ranged from 136-280 Gy2 with a median of 206 Gy2. Follow-up time ranged from 23-156 months with a median of 54 months.
