A Brazilian mechanic, Jose Alano, built a solar water heater in 2002 using 100 plastic bottles and 100 milk cartons. The invention became popular after winning an award and has since been promoted by media, electricity companies, and local governments in Brazil. Over 7,000 people now benefit from similar solar heaters produced by cooperatives in Santa Catarina State.
