What is Understanding Acute Myeloid Leukemia about?
Acute myeloid leukemia (AML) is a cancer of the blood and bone marrow in which abnormal myeloid stem cells are produced. It progresses rapidly if not treated. The bone marrow normally produces blood cells, but in AML abnormal myeloblasts are produced instead of healthy white blood cells. Risk factors include smoking, prior chemotherapy or radiation therapy, and exposure to radiation or benzene. Signs may include fever, fatigue, bruising, and bleeding.
