The government of Myanmar changed its capital from Yangon to Nay Pyi Taw in 2006 for several reasons. Yangon was overpopulated and its infrastructure could not support the growing population. As the former capital built under British rule, Yangon also had a large number of historic buildings that the government wanted to preserve.
