This study aimed to compare the survival rates of smear-positive and smear-negative multidrug resistant tuberculosis (MDR-TB) patients in Witbank, South Africa. Medical records from 442 MDR-TB patients hospitalized from 2001-2010 were reviewed. Kaplan-Meier and Cox proportional hazard analyses found that smear-positive patients had higher mortality rates than smear-negative patients.
