This material, taken and translated from the papers of Friedrich Waismann, contains recordings of conversations in which Wittgenstein was invited to share and explain his ideas to members of the Vienna Circle, especially Waismann and Moritz Schlick. The conversations make most of the volume's content. Appendixes A and B are the only sections not explicitly attributed to Wittgenstein, though they were still intended to present his thought. Appendix A is itself based on conversations with Wittgenstein, while Appendix B represents Waismann's efforts to interpret some important principles within the Tractatus, in light of the ongoing conversations at the time. Thus, for the most part, this book provides a reliable and first-hand account of Wittgenstein's thought before his return to Cambridge as a professor. An account which also enjoyed the philosopher’s personal involvement and approval at the time.
