Hugh Doston Carberry was born in 1921 in Montreal, Canada to a prominent Jamaican family. He was educated in Jamaica and the UK. Carberry had a successful legal career in Jamaica, serving as Clerk of the Houses of Parliament and later as a Judge of the Jamaican Court of Appeal. He was also a poet and active in his church and cultural organizations. Carberry died in 1989.
