The Sacking of Lawrence occurred in 1856 when pro-slavery activists attacked and ransacked the anti-slavery town of Lawrence, Kansas. They destroyed two printing presses, damaged the Free State Hotel, and looted the town. The attack exacerbated the guerrilla war in Kansas Territory known as Bleeding Kansas and arose from tensions between pro- and anti-slavery settlers in the region.
