What is Preface: Beauty And Aesthetics In Chinese Philosophy about?

What is beauty? What is goodness? In Chinese aesthetics as in Chinese ethics, we see the word of beauty (mei美) comes from description of bigness of a sheep while the world of goodness (shan善) comes from description of palatableness of mutton. Both meanings represent an ancient age called the age of "sheep culture (yang wenhua羊文化)," which is considered as an age of transition from normadic state of hunting to agricultural mode of settledness. In Mencius, we thus read the semi-definition of mei as "Chongshi shi zhi wei mei充实之谓美, and the semi-definition of shan as "Keyu zhi wei shan 可欲之为善." Mei is to fill up or enrich a form so that we could experience beauty, shan on the other hand is to desire the desirable so that we may act with a right direction. We see that both mei and shan come from human feelings related to things we pursue and enjoy, and yet they are separate and separable as two aspects of the same reality or human life itself. Given both the closeness and yet separateness of beauty as attribute of aesthetics and goodness as attribute of ethics, it is understandable that Chinese thinkers often speaks of meide美德 (fair virtures) and rengemei人格美 (beauty of personanity) in ethi
