When two waves meet, their displacements add based on the principle of superposition. The resulting interference can be constructive or destructive depending on the phase difference between the waves. For two equal waves traveling in opposite directions, the interference forms a standing wave pattern with antinodes of maximum amplitude spaced half a wavelength apart.
