What is Music about?

This study investigates the role of μ-opioid receptors (MOR) in the pleasure derived from music using PET and fMRI imaging. Results indicate that listening to pleasurable music increases MOR availability in key brain regions associated with hedonic responses, linking subjective musical pleasure to neurochemical activity. The findings suggest that the MOR system is involved in aesthetic rewards, expanding its known role beyond primary biological rewards such as food and sex.
