What is Research Highlights: Lipid Technology 9/2008 about?

## Optimisation of lipid production by the oleaginous yeast Lipomyces starkeyi In a study of lipid production by the oleaginous yeast Lipomyces starkeyi AS 2.1560 three important factors have been identified: the nature of the mixed sugar in the medium, the yeast extract, and the presence of ferrous sulfate. A lipid content of 61% was obtained with mixed sugars (73.3 g/L containing glucose 48.9 g/L and xylose 24.4 g/L), yeast extract (7.9 g/L), and FeSO 4 (4.0 mg/L). The mixed sugars resemble those obtained from lingocellulosebased carbohydrates. Lipid content and lipid productivity increased 1.59-fold and 2.03-fold respectively through the optimisation process. A typical fatty acid composition was palmitic (36.6%), palmitoleic (4.3%). stearic (6.2%), oleic acid (48.9%), and some minor components.
