This article analyzes changing perceptions of street children in San Jose, Costa Rica between 1965-1981 by examining articles in La Nacion newspaper. In the 1960s, street children working in the city were considered a normal part of the urban landscape, though their lives were difficult. However, by 1981, the ideal Costa Rican child was one who attended school and did not work, and street children began to be seen as dangerous and evidence of social problems.
