Jean Henri Dunant was a Swiss businessman and social activist who witnessed the aftermath of the Battle of Solferino in 1859. This experience inspired him to write A Memory of Solferino, which led to the creation of the International Committee of the Red Cross in 1863 and the Geneva Convention of 1864. Dunant received the first Nobel Peace Prize in 1901 for his work founding the Red Cross and developing international humanitarian law.
